Doing Fine

Jun 27, 2009

Opal and I went to the beach. We went to the local Pebble Beach, in Pescadero, which is actually officially part of Bean Hollow Beach. We'd never been before and we both thought it was a great beach -- if you park for the pebble part, you get a two-fer, pebbles on one side, and tide pools on the other. Opal adopted another family for the tide pools, and found crabs with great excitement.

opalb.jpg Here is Opal on the pebbled side, with two cherished finds, a feather and a piece of kelp, which she is whirling around her head. She says it is either a horse or a thing for driving horses, or possibly both? As you can see, her idea of beach attire is a little eccentric. And when we got home and I asked her to change into something not actually changed in color by dirt (she fell into a tidepool and then perfectly voluntarily embraced a cliff), she put on long sleeves and long pants. On the hottest day of the year so far. And then put her Little Mermaid costume over top.

On the way back up from the tidepools, Opal was feeling uncertain about one bit of clambering, and asked if I'd help her. While I was still contemplating my advice about what to do next, she said impatiently "Am I doing fine?" I realized that when she'd asked for help, she'd meant that she wanted me to say breezily "Oh, you're doing fine." So I said my line, she stepped confidently to the next rock, and all was good.
