Faint Praise

We went to Ikea today, and bought gingerbread toffee. I gave Opal a piece, and she sighed with happiness. "That's one of the things I like about my family. We can eat and walk at the same time." There you have it, folks; my best quality? I can walk and chew gum!
I spent a while at dinner trying to convince her that when she's not looking, lettuce tries to crawl away, but it can only move by wiggling, so it's very slow. This led us to a discussion of flying lettuce, The game was pretty much up when I started thinking about underwater lettuce (it's much more efficient) and flying lettuce. I didn't manage to keep a straight face while pointing out that lettuce flies much better as a head than individual leaves. Paul suggested firing it out of a cannon, and I said when it landed, you'd have salad. Opal said "NO, you shouldn't do that." "Why not?" "It wouldn't be good." "Why not?" "There wouldn't be any veggies, or salad dressing." "Are there any other reasons?" "You'd probably burn the lettuce up."
